Tigua Tribe fights contempt charge for 'sweepstakes' machines

The Tigua Tribe was in court on Monday to defend itself from a contempt motion filed by the state of Texas.

The tribe operates "sweepstakes" machines at the Speaking Rock Entertainment Center on the reservation. The state claims the machines are illegal gaming devices that are prohibited under a long-standing court order.

Judge Kathleen Cardone declined to rule on the state's motion for contempt penalties. But she indicated that she wants the matter resolved by the end of the year.

"We need this case to get resolved," Cardone told the parties, The El Paso Times reported.

Cardone will hold another hearing in October, the paper said.
