Karuk Tribe urges residents to support casino at public meeting

The Karuk Tribe says its gaming facility will create 300 jobs in Siskiyou County, California.

The tribe is planning a casino on a mix of trust land and fee land. To be built in two phases, the facility will feature up to 800 gaming machines, two restaurants, a bar, an 80-room hotel and 723 parking spaces.

“We believe this will enhance Yreka and all of Siskiyou County,” Vice Chair Michael Thom told residents at a public meeting organized by the county, The Siskiyou Daily News reported.

The tribe signed a Class III gaming compact with Gov. Jerry Brown (D) in December. The agreement has yet to be ratified by the state Legislature.

As part of the compact, the tribe negotiated an intergovernmental agreement with the county. The meeting on Tuesday was part of that process.
