A city council member in Glendale, Arizona, blasts opponents of the Tohono O'odham Nation off-reservation casino:
Recently, I had the pleasure of participating in the groundbreaking of the West Valley Resort and Casino, a $400 million economic investment that is already bringing jobs and development interest from other private developers to Glendale and the West Valley. As I scanned the room at the ceremony on newly designated tribal land, I saw leaders from Peoria, Tolleson, Surprise, El Mirage, Phoenix, the Tohono O'odham Nation and Glendale. This demonstration of regional cooperation hasn't occurred since the coalition to attract the Arizona Cardinals' Stadium. Sadly, just as we faced competition then from the East Valley, Mesa's mayor and some of his East Valley peers are trying to halt the economic-development benefits of this development. Mayor Finter and others are pushing a false narrative about additional Valley casino development to persuade our two senators to change federal law and break a promise made by President Reagan and the U.S. Congress to the Tohono O'odham Nation.Get the Story:
