The Catawba Nation of South Carolina is seeing support for its proposed casino in North Carolina. Rep. Jim Moran (D-Virginia) and Rep. George Miller (D-California) have sent letters to the Bureau of Indian Affairs to support the $600 million casino in Cleveland County. So has former Rep. Bill Richardson (D-New Mexico). All three were in office when Congress passed the the Catawba Indian Tribe of South Carolina Land Claims Settlement Act. They say the tribe has been unfairly limited from pursuing its land and gaming rights. “It’s just horrible, in my view, the way the Catawbas have been treated by North and South Carolina," Moran told Indian Country Today. "They have a mandatory right to thousands of acres, but they’ve been denied the ability to implement what the law requires.” The law includes Cleveland County in the tribe's service area. The tribe has submitted a 16-acre land-into-trust application for the casino site. Get the Story:
