Turtle Mountain Band proposes $60M off-reservation casino

The Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians wants to build a $60 million off-reservation casino in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Tribal leaders presented the idea to the city council on Monday night. They hope this project will be more successful that prior efforts in 2009 and in 2005.

City leaders are generally supportive of the idea. But they plan to hold public hearings before moving forward.

“I want to have a public dialogue, and I think you do, too,” said Hal Gershman, the city council president, The Grand Forks Herald reported. “We need that public input.”

The tribe operates a casino on its reservation, about 187 miles from Grand Forks.
