Keweenaw Bay Indian Community looks for new casino site
Wednesday, January 8, 2014
The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community is looking at a new casino site after Michigan Gov. Rick
Snyder (R) rejected an off-reservation proposal.
The tribal council approved $9,200 to study a site on the waterfront on Baraga. The plan includes buying an existing hotel and building the casino around it, The Houghton Daily Mining Gazette reported.
The tribe was seeking to move the Ojibwa Casino in Marquette to a location that's closer to its headquarters. The Bureau of Indian Affairsapproved
the plan in December 2011 but Snyder refused to concur in with the decision
that raised issues that weren't directly related to the project.
In addition to the Marquette facility, the tribe operates a casino in Baraga.
