Mohegan Tribe gets a second shot at casino in Massachusetts

The Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut will get a second shot at a commercial casino in Massachusetts.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission said the tribe can proceed with the $1 billion Suffolk Downs project in the eastern part of the state. But another referendum will be held in the city of Revere -- possibly in February 2014 -- due to changes in the plan.

“We’re really excited about it,” Mitchell Etess, the chief executive officer of the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority, told The New London Day. “Now we’ve got a clear path to move forward with the city of Revere. This is a city that has voted for this casino, and we know we can create a great opportunity. We feel very positive and energized.”

The change means the license for the eastern region won't be awarded early next year as expected. The western region still appears to be on track for a decision.

The Mohegans originally sought the western region license but lost a referendum in the town of Palmer by 93 votes.
