The
Catawba Nation of
South Carolina is exploring a casino in North Carolina, The Charlotte Observer reported, but a spokesperson for the tribe denied the claim.
The tribe reportedly talked to Gov. Pat McCrory (R) about a Class III gaming compact. But some state lawmakers have already raised objections to the idea.
“We don’t need an out-of-state tribe coming into North Carolina and opening a casino,” state Sen. Tom Apodaca, the second-highest ranking Republican, told the paper. “I can tell you I haven’t heard of one person yet who was excited about the idea.”
A deal with the Catawba Nation could impact the exclusive gaming rights of the
Eastern Band of Cherokee
Indians.
