The National Indian Gaming Commission is about to get a new member. According to a notice that will be published in the Federal Register tomorrow, Interior Secretary Sally Jewell is naming Jonodev Chaudhuri as an associate member of the NIGC. Barring any obstacles, he will be seated after a 30-day comment period. "Mr. Chaudhuri’s wide experience in community service, legal affairs, and organizational administration make him a highly qualified candidate for membership on the National Indian Gaming Commission," the forthcoming notice, which was signed by Jewell, states. "His broad perspective as a result of this experience will enrich the Commission’s deliberations and contribute to informed decisions that promote economic well- being." The appointment means the NIGC won't be left without two members following the imminent departure of Tracie Stevens, a member of the Tulalip Tribes. She is stepping down later this month after three years on the job. Chaudhuri is a citizen of the Muscogee Nation and has served as a judge on his tribe's highest court. He currently serves as senior counselor to Assistant Secretary Kevin Washburn at the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Dan Little, a non-Indian, also serves on the NIGC.
