Three tribes in race for commercial casino in Massachusetts

Three tribes are bidding on commercial casinos in Massachusetts.

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut is bidding on a license in the eastern region. The tribe wants to open a $1 billion casino in Milford, a town about 35 miles from Boston, the most populous city in the state.

The Mohegan Tribe, also from Connecticut, is bidding on a license for the western region. The $600 million Mohegan Sun Palmer will be competing with an $800 million proposal from Hard Rock International, which is owned by the Seminole Tribe of Florida.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission expects to issue a decision on both licenses in early 2014.
