Pequot Tribe faces opposition to Massachusetts casino plan

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut is seeing local opposition to its proposed commercial casino in Massachusetts.

The tribe is bidding on a license for a commercial casino in eastern Massachusetts. The potential market is large -- the town of Milford is only about 35 miles from Boston, the most populous city in the state.

"That's exactly what we're trying to do," Foxwoods Resort Casino Chief Executive Scott Butera told the Associated Press of the tribe's desire to enter the Massachusetts market. "We have a strong customer base in that area."

As part of the process, the tribe must gain local approval. That doesn't look too promising as town voters are meeting tonight to discuss their opposition to the project.

"It would be a net negative for the town of Milford, not that there wouldn't be positives," John Seaver, a leader of Casino-Free Milford, told the AP.

Two other groups are bidding for the eastern Massachusetts license.
