Court ruling on Pauma Band compact affected union provision

A federal judge invalidated a Class III gaming compact for the Pauma Band of Luiseño Indians of California last month, a ruling that affected how unions organize at the tribe's casino.

The tribe no longer has to remain neutral on union matters at Casino Pauma. And any organizing efforts must take place by secret ballot, which is typically more difficult than obtaining so-called authorization cards.

Casino workers, however, believe they have enough support to join the Unite Here union. They held a rally yesterday and presented a petition with 149 signatures, representing more than half of the employees at the casino.
