The Oneida Nation is celebrating 20 years of Class III gaming.

The tribe signed a compact with then-governor Mario Cuomo on April 16, 1993. The landmark agreement, the first of its kind in the state, paved the way for the successful Turning Stone Resort Casino, which opened on July 20, 1993.

“In the last twenty years, the world seems to me to be coming apart with dissension, with the inability to work together,” Cuomo said in a video that was prepared by the tribe. “What the Oneida Nation has done is to give us a lesson in collaboration. It is the magic word – collaboration.”

The tribe employs 4,500 people at the casino. A major expansion is due to open this summer in time for the 20th anniversary celebration.
