New York governor wants casino in Seneca Nation's territory

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) is proposing a non-Indian casino in Niagara Falls, where the Seneca Nation operates a gaming facility.

The tribe's Class III gaming compact promises a zone of exclusivity. But Cuomo believes “ending the Indian monopoly would be an economic benefit” to the state and local communities, The Buffalo News reported.

The compact is currently before an arbitration panel because the tribe has accused the state of violating the exclusivity provisions. The tribe has withheld more than $500 million in revenues from the state.
