New York
Gov. Andrew Cuomo
(D) wants to authorize three casinos in upstate New York but the Class III gaming compact with the
St. Regis Mohawk Tribe could complicate matters.
Cuomo hasn't said where the casinos would be located. But the compact promises the tribe exclusivity for Class III games in seven counties.
“I don’t think the agreement we have will let them have a casino because (the Mohawks) have an exclusive all the way from Plattsburgh over," Franklin County Legislator Guy “Tim” Smith (D) told The Plattsburgh Press-Republican.
The compact requires the tribe to share revenues with the state.
The tribe has been withholding the money because it says the state has allowed unauthorized gaming in the zone of exclusivity.
