Meskwaki Nation worried about proposed non-Indian casino

The Meskwaki Nation says a proposed non-Indian gaming facility will draw jobs and revenue away from the tribal casino.

The tribe operates the Meskwaki Bingo Casino and Hotel in Tama. A non-Indian group wants to build a casino in Cedar Rapids, about 50 miles away.

"All you're going to be doing is taking jobs away from us and putting those same jobs in Cedar Rapids," Chairman Frank Black Cloud told KCRG-TV. The casino employs about 872 people, 102 of whom are tribal members, KCRG reported.

If voters in Linn County approve the casino on March 5, it will go before the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission.
