Florida lawmakers create committee to study gaming in state

Lawmakers in Florida are voting today to create a committee that will undertake a two-year comprehensive study of gaming in the state.

State law authorizes slot machines, certain card games and horse racing. And the Seminole Tribe offers Class III gaming under a compact that includes revenue sharing provisions.

The compact expires in 2015. Lawmakers ratified the deal in 2010 with the idea of re-examining gaming in five years.

In the meantime, Internet "cafes" have sprouted up around the state. They offer patrons a chance to engage in a form of electronic gaming.
