Voters in Rhode Island authorized table games at a slot machine facility, bringing more competition to the growing gaming market in the Northeast.
Casino-style facilities are now legal in Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York and Maryland. That's seen as bad news for the
Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the
Mohegan Tribe, whose facilities depend on traffic from neighboring states.
Both tribes took a hit during the recession. But tribal executives said they are ready to compete.
“We are prepared for the introduction of table games in Rhode Island,”

Casino President and CEO Butera told The Norwich Bulletin. “We have been anticipating it,” added
Mohegan Sun President and CEO Bobby Soper.
The
Twin River Casino in Rhode Island will be able to add blackjack, roulette and craps thanks to the referendum.
The facility is in Lincoln, about 30 miles from Taunton, Massachusetts, where the
Mashpee Wampanoag
Tribe wants to build a casino.
