California tribes await state action on off-reservation casinos
Monday, November 5, 2012
Two California tribes made history when their off-reservation casinos were approved by
Gov. Jerry Brown
(D) in September but they are still waiting for legislative approval of their Class III gaming compacts.
The
Enterprise Rancheria
plans to build a casino with 2,000 slot machines near Marysville. The site is about 32 miles from tribal headquarters.
The
North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians
is also planning a casino with 2,000 slot machines near Fresno. The site is about 38 miles from the reservation.
If the state Legislature approves the compacts, the final step will be for the
Bureau of Indian Affairs
to place the gaming sites in trust. The
National Indian Gaming Commission
is also reviewing the gaming management contracts for the
Enterprise environmental impact statement
and the
North Fork environmental impact statement
.
