Oregon tribes enlist former governors in anti-casino campaign

The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde and the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe ramped up their campaign against a non-Indian casino on the November ballot.

Through the It's Still A Bad Idea Committee, the tribes brought in Gov. John Kitzhaber (D) and three former governors to oppose the proposed casino. All said the project would not create jobs or economic development.

"This isn't going to solve Oregon's financial problem," former governor Ted Kulongoski (D), who once signed a compact to approve an off-reservation casino, said at a press conference, the Associated Press reported. "I guarantee you, if this passes, it will have no impact whatsoever on the long-term picture."

The casino would be authorized if voters approve three separate questions on the November ballot.
