St. Regis Mohawk Tribe firm on exclusivity in gaming compact

The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe of New York won't give up exclusivity provisions in its Class III gaming compact, a spokesperson said.

The compact promises the tribe a zone of exclusivity in eight counties in exchange for sharing revenues with the state. The zone includes Warren County, where the non-Indian owners of a resort want to open a casino.

An attorney for the resort claimed that the tribe was willing to give up exclusivity in order to keep a bigger share of revenues. But a spokesperson for the tribe denied the suggestion.

The tribe has withheld an estimated $35 million from the state in a dispute over the expansion of non-Indian gaming in the zone of exclusivity.
