"In the early 70’s South Florida’s Miccosukee Tribe erected a simple, unremarkable building on the eastern most plot of land on their reservation in Florida’s Everglades.
The main reservation village is about 10 miles west in the heart of the protected national park. The new structure was quite a curiosity sitting at the junction of the Tamiami Trail (which goes across the peninsula from Miami through the heart of the Glades to Fort Myers/Naples and then up the left coast to Tampa) and the last charted/named road on the Miami map: Krome Avenue.
Krome is the only north south route from Homestead to Broward County. Points north have long been the main conduit for transporting the southern tip of Florida’s vast winter crops of both fruits and vegetables, plus orchids, palm trees and landscape plants used throughout the USA.
Tractor trailers in the winter are practically in convoy as they carry the nation’s tomatoes and peppers and potatoes and lettuce to the various depots on the east coast. The Miccosukees decided to erect their first major tribal structure at this intersection with every intention of it becoming the gaming center of the area.
More than 40 years later, the tribe expanded with the times to include a full resort, hotel, casino, event arena and huge bingo hall. It became the destination for first bingo, then poker, then slots in the entire market. "
