Tohono O'odham casino opponents dispute economic impacts

Foes of the Tohono O’odham Nation off-reservation casino released a study that disputes the economic impacts of the proposed facility.

The tribe has said the West Valley Resort will create more than 9,000 jobs. But the Keeping the Promise group says the facility will only generate around 5,000 jobs, most of which would be non-permanent construction jobs.

The tribe also said the casino will have a $300 million annual economic impact on the region. The group's One Buck for Glendale site, however, claims state and local communities will only see minimal benefits from the facility, including just $173,000 in additional tax revenues for the city of Glendale.

The Keeping the Promise group includes the Gila River Indian Community, whose leaders oppose the Tohono O'odham casino.
