The Picayune Rancheria of Chukchansi Indians is trying to line up opposition to the off-reservation casino sought by the North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians, The Fresno Bee reports.
The Chukchansi Tribe has asked local organizations to oppose the casino or stay neutral. Some say they are being pressured because they receive money from the tribe.
"They are strong-arming us," Gary Murphy of the Coarsegold Rodeo Association told The Bee. "I don't think it's right."
The group, which received $15,000 from the tribe, has voted to stay out of the matter
The Bass Lake Chamber of Commerce received a small $150 donation from the tribe. But the tribe said it was stopping payment on the check because the group won't take a stand on the North Fork casino.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs approved the North Fork casino last September. Under the Indian
Gaming Regulatory Act, Gov. Jerry
Brown (D) can veto it.
