Editorial: City makes right decision on Soo Tribe casino plan

"Efforts to develop the $245 million Kewadin Lansing casino will move forward now that the Lansing City Council has given approval to various agreements needed to support the proposal.

Plenty of hurdles remain, but now the city and development partners Lansing Future LLC and the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians can begin addressing them. If they pull it off, Lansing will benefit from 700 construction jobs, some 1,500 casino jobs, and millions in payments that the tribe would make to the city, including $5 million or more for a scholarship fund to help Lansing high school graduates go to college.

Instead of stalling the proposal, the council agreed to sell city property, outlined development terms, changed zoning and adopted a brownfield agreement at its Monday meeting."
