The Aquinnah
Wampanoag Tribe is asking three communities to schedule casino elections.
The tribe is looking at sites in Lakeville, Freetown and Fall River. H.3702,
the state's gaming law, requires a host community to schedule a referendum on a
proposed casino.
The tribe has yet to present details about its plans. Chairwoman Cheryl Andrews-Maltais promised more information as the casino vote approaches.
H.3702 requires a community to hold an election not less than 60 days but no more than 90 days after receiving a request.
Depending on the timeline, that would place a vote sometime between May 7 and June 6.
The law also requires the tribe to negotiate a Class III gaming compact by July 31.
Gov. Deval Patrick (D) has not responded to the tribe's request.
