Shinnecock Nation axes leaders after casino partner complains

The Shinnecock Nation of New York removed four leaders from office after the tribe's gaming partner complained, Newsday reports.

Trustee Lance Gumbs, who is one of the more well-known leaders of the tribe, and trustee Gordell Wright were removed on August 1, the paper said. Two members of the tribal gaming authority were also removed after Gateway Casino Resorts complained about potential development projects that the four were allegedly working on.

In a statement to Newsday, Gateway said it received "information from the Nation showing that some tribal members were attempting to pursue gaming developments outside of the contracts between Gateway and the Nation and without the approval of the Nation's membership. Following the receipt of this information from the Nation, Gateway informed third parties involved in these efforts of Gateway's exclusive contractual agreements with the Nation and the Nation's Gaming Authority."

Gateway bankrolled the tribe's federal recognition effort.
