The Santa Ysabel Band of Mission Indians hopes to expand its casino after resolving its debt woes.

The tribe declared bankruptcy in federal court last month, citing $3 million owed to San Diego County and debts to other entities. The move offers a way to keep the Santa Ysabel Casino open and 120 people in their jobs.

"It is in everyone’s best interest for the county to work with us to renegotiate the debt,” Chairman Virgil Perez told The Ramona Home Journal.

Customers won't notice big changes at the casino during the bankruptcy proceedings, general manager David Chelette said. But once everything is resolved, the tribe wants to expand the facility, he said.
