"California does not need a gambling land rush. Gov. Jerry Brown should reject two proposals for off-reservation casinos in California, to avoid setting a bad precedent. California tribes should confine gambling operations to reservations, not hunt for the most lucrative casino sites elsewhere.

The governor has until the end of August to make a decision on casino proposals by the Enterprise Rancheria of Estom Yumeka Maidu Tribe and the North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians. The Enterprise Rancheria wants to build a casino and hotel along State Route 65 near Marysville, about 50 miles from its tribal lands east of Oroville. The North Fork Tribe wants to put a casino and hotel along State Route 99 near Madera, about 40 miles from its reservation. In both cases, the sites are along major state highways rather than on more far-removed tribal lands — and the plans have the backing of out-of-state investors with deep pockets."
