California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) has until August 31 to approve or reject off-reservation casinos for two tribes, The Sacramento Bee reports.
The Enterprise Rancheria is seeking a casino about 36 miles from its headquarters. The gaming site for the North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians is also about 36 miles from its headquarters.
Brown is facing pressure from members of Congress and other tribes to reject both casinos.
But he isn't commenting until he makes his decision.
"Our office continues to solicit and consider input from all stakeholders regarding the projects as we weigh the interests of local communities, tribes and the people of California," a spokesperson told the paper.
Both tribes are following the two-part determination section of the Indian
Gaming Regulatory Act.
It gives the state governor veto authority over proposed off-reservation casinos.
Since IGRA became law in 1988, only three tribes have successfully opened casinos under the two-part determination section.
