New York governor urged to discuss Shinnecock Nation gaming

A New York state lawmaker is urging Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) to discuss gaming with the Shinnecock Nation.

Assemblyman Fred Thiele, an independent who represents a district that includes the reservation, isn't a fan of casinos. But he said Cuomo should sit down with the tribe to "consider where the interest of the State of New York and the Shinnecock may intersect," Southampton Patch reported.

The tribe gained federal recognition in October 2010 and wants to open as many as three casinos. Cuomo said he won't talk to the tribe until voters consider a referendum to expand non-Indian gaming in the state.

The earlier a vote could occur is fall 2013, Southampton Patch reported.
