Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe continues negotiations for compact

Gov. Deval Patrick (D) plans to finalize a Class III gaming compact with the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe by a July 31 deadline.

Patrick hopes the deal will be finished so lawmakers can approve it before the end of the legislative session. "I think the conversations have been going very well," he said, State House News Service reported.

H.3702, the state's gaming law, authorizes the state to enter into a compact with "a federally recognized tribe." The state is home to two recognized Wampanoag tribes but Patrick is only negotiating with the Mashpees.
