Lawmakers in North Carolina are expected to consider a Class III gaming compact for the Eastern Band of Cherokee
Indians, The Asheville Citizen-Times reports.
The tribe negotiated the deal with outgoing Gov. Bev Perdue (D) last year. Lawmakers could finally approve it when they meet next month, the paper said.
The agreement would allow live card dealers at the Harrah’s
Cherokee Casino and Resort. In exchange, the tribe has agreed to share revenues with the state.
“We hope to have the new compact approved soon and be ready to take this important issue in front of the North Carolina General Assembly in the upcoming short session," Chief Michell Hicks said in a statement, the paper reported.
