Opponents of the off-reservation casino proposed by the North Fork Rancheria of
Mono Indians are lobbying California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) to reject it.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs
approved the casino last September. The tribe has the support of Madera County, the city of Madera and the Madera Irrigation District.
Opponents, however, claim there isn't enough local support for the project. Sen. Dianne Feinstein
(D-California) has asked the Obama administration to look into the issue.
Under the Indian
Gaming Regulatory Act, Gov. Jerry
Brown (D) can veto the casino.
