The Kialegee Tribal Town will continue work on its casino despite opposition from the Muscogee Nation.
The Red Clay Casino is located on an Indian allotment owned by two members of the Muscogee Nation. Muscogee Chief George Tiger says his tribe hasn't given its consent for the project.
"It is my position as principal chief of the Muscogee Creek nation that the original restricted Creek allotment question should not be used as a decidable travel casino by any other tribe, or tribal town without the consent of the nation or without following all proper procedures," Tiger said at a press conference on Monday, KRMG-TV reported.
The Kialegees said they were "extremely disappointed" to learn of Tiger's opposition. The tribe maintains it has jurisdiction over the allotment in question.
"The Kialegee Tribal Town has the legal right as a successor to the Creek Confederacy to pursue economic development on lands located within our former reservation boundaries," the tribe said in a statement.
The National Indian Gaming
Commission has said it will issue an Indian lands determination for the casino.
