The United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians in Oklahoma is reportedly interested in a casino in South Carolina, although a news report doesn't provide any confirmation from the tribe.
However, the idea for a casino near Hilton Head Island has some local support. And some high-profile people are involved in the project, according to The Island Packet.
"This is not a sprint, but a marathon. We're in the first steps," a developer told the paper.
Gov. Nikki Haley (R) opposes a gaming compact with the tribe, a spokesperson said.
