Sokaogon Chippewa Community appeals casino bond ruling

The Sokaogon Chippewa Community of Wisconsin is fighting a $20.3 million judgment in a casino bond dispute.

The tribe failed to make timely payments to Wells Fargo, Judge William C. Griesbach ruled last month. The tribe is asking the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals to overturn the decision.

The tribe waived its sovereign immunity in the bond agreement. The deal was never submitted to the National Indian Gaming Commission for approval but Griesbach determined that it wasn't a management contract.

The lawsuit is now being cited in a radio ad campaign by a group called Citizens for a Strong Sheboygan. The group claims the tribe is "flat broke" because it can't make the bond payments.

The tribe wants to build an off-reservation casino in Sheboygan.
