Catawba Nation sues state for gaming rights on reservation

The Catawba Nation is suing the state of South Carolina over gaming.

The Gambling Cruise Act of 2005 authorizes slot machines on ships off the South Carolina coast. The tribe says it should be allowed to engage in the same type of gaming on its reservation.

The Catawba Nation is the only federally recognized tribe in South Carolina. But the tribe can't follow the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act due to its land claim settlement act.

The settlement instead requires the tribe to follow state gambling laws.
