Passamaquoddy Tribe makes case to state voters for gaming

The Passamaquoddy Tribe of Maine says voters should approve two racinos in order to generate jobs and economic development.

The Passamaquoddy Tribe at Pleasant Point and the Passamaquoddy Tribe at Indian Township will operate a racetrack in Washington County with 600 slot machines if voters say yes on November 8. Tribal leaders cited high unemployment rates on their reservations.

“We can change our lifestyles by taking control of our destiny. A ‘no’ vote would mean another setback for our county. A ‘yes’ vote would mean that together, we can all move forward," Pleasant Point Gov. Reubin Clayton Cleaves said a press conference, The Bangor Daily News reported.

Question 2 also authorizes a non-Indian facility in the city of Biddeford, whose developers are bankrolling the Putting Maine To Work initiative.
