Jemez Pueblo weighs options for off-reservation casino denial

Jemez Pueblo in New Mexico struck back at at the Obama administration after its off-reservation casino was rejected on Friday.

The tribe said its casino in Anthony, in the southern part of the state, will generate jobs and boost the economy. The tribe also questioned why the Bureau of Indian Affairs raised jurisdictional concerns about the site, which is more than 300 miles from the reservation.

“In addition to ignoring the need for jobs, the decision also ignores the express terms of the Agreement," the tribe said in a press release, referring to an intergovernmental agreement signed with Dona Ana County. "The Pueblo expressly reserves the right to provide all the services, thereby, exercising total jurisdiction over the land. The Agreement does exactly what the letter says is lacking.”
