Michigan governor opposes Little River off-reservation casino

MIchigan Gov. Rick Snyder (R) opposes an off-reservation casino for the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians.

The tribe wants to build a casino in Fruitport Township. The site is about 80 miles from the reservation.

“I appreciate the tough times in this and other communities,” Snyder told The Muskegon Chronicle Editorial Board. “The issue of putting them on non-tribal lands, that's where I drew the line."

“We are not going to put a casino just anywhere,” Snyder added. “That's not a good answer to put a casino in every community. I don't think we need that.”

The tribe had negotiated an amendment to its Class III gaming compact to allow the off-reservation casino. But that was with former governor Jennifer Granholm (D).
