The Los Coyotes Band of Cahuilla and Cupeno Indians has been meeting with staff for California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) in hopes of gaining support for an off-reservation casino.
The tribe plans to build the casino in Barstow. That's more than 100 miles from the reservation.
The tribe needs to negotiate a Class III gaming compact with Brown. Under the Indian
Gaming Regulatory Act, Brown also needs to approve the casino itself.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs will
hold a public hearing next Wednesday, July 27, to discuss the environmental impact
statement for the casino.
