The city of Glendale and the Gila River Indian Community are gathering signatures on a petition that opposes the Tohono O'odham Nation
off-reservation casino.
The city and the tribe have formed a group called Keeping The Promise. Their petition claims the Tohono O'odham Nation's West Valley Resort will hurt the neighborhood.
"We believe casinos on traditional tribal lands -- away from neighborhoods, with revenues shared by the state -- are good for tribes and good for Arizona," the petition states.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs has agreed to acquire land for the Tohono O'odham Nation but a gaming determination has not been made.
