Illegitimate 'tribe' owes county $240K in failed casino bid

A group called the Western Mohegan Tribe and Nation owes a county in New York $240,000 in back taxes in a failed casino bid.

The illegitimate group vowed to build a casino, a farm, museum and other attractions on a 10-acre parcel in Ulster County. But none of the plans ever came to fruition.

"It's been 20 years of a shell game," Ulster County Comptroller Elliott Auerbach told The MIddletown Times Herald-Record.

The group lacks federal recognition and state recognition.
