Bills to legalize Internet gaming and to restrict off-reservation gaming are being considered in the 112th Congress.
Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas) introduced H.R.2366, the Internet Gambling Prohibition, Poker Consumer Protection, and Strengthening UIGEA Act in June. It would legalize Internet gaming and set up an office to handle state and tribal licensing.
"We want to have an iron-clad system to make sure that those who play for money are playing in an honest, fair system where they can reap the benefits of their winnings," Barton said in a statement, The National Law Journal reported. "To put it simply, this bill is about having the personal freedom to play a skill-based game you enjoy without fear of breaking the law."
Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) introduced H.R.1424, the Off-Reservation Land Acquisition Guidance Act in July. It requires the Interior Department to consider
distance from the reservation when reviewing land-into-trust applications.
Since 1988, only three tribes have opened off-reservation casinos under the two-part determination section of the Indian
Gaming Regulatory Act.
