Editorial: Something just not right at Mississippi Choctaw casino

"Something is rotten in the state of Choctaw. Or certainly so it seems following the FBI raid recently on the Indian tribe’s casino complex near Philadelphia.

Federal officials aren’t saying what the raid is about, and the Choctaws are being equally tight-lipped.

But the timing of the raid — coming a week after the now nullified runoff election for chief of the tribe — certainly seems curious.

In that election, the incumbent, Beasley Denson, was defeated by Phyliss J. Anderson, who campaigned on the pledge to reclaim some of the management of the tribe’s gaming operations from an out-of-state firm. She portrayed Denson as being too thick with the Atlanta-based company, Mercury Gaming Management, which operates Pearl River Resort under contract with the Choctaws."
