The Poarch Band of Creek Indians would like to open an off-reservation casino at its dog track in Alabama but plans are many years away.
The tribe bought a controlling interest in the Mobile Greyhound Park. The track is about 60 miles from the reservation.
But getting a casino there will be difficult. "There's still got to be agreement with the governor," Jay Dorris, president of Poarch Creek Indian Gaming, told The Mobile Press-Register. There's still got to be local support. There's still got to be a compact."
Gov. Robert Bentley (R) is also against the idea. "Current Alabama law says that casinos are illegal in Alabama," a press secretary told the paper.
