Lawmakers in Maine held an all-day hearing to consider two gaming bills, one of which would authorize a racino for the Passamaquoddy Tribe.
Joseph Socobasin, the chief at Indian Township, said his tribe has been pushing for gaming since the 1990s.
"If any place deserves to have the opportunity for gaming, it's Washington County," he told lawmakers, The Portland Press Herald reported.
Lawmakers could pass L.D. 1203, the tribe's bill, outright or put the issue to voters. In the past, state voters have rejected tribal gaming but have approved non-Indian gaming.
