Members of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians are being asked to approve plans for an off-reservation casino in Romulus, Michigan.
Chairman Darwin "Joe" McCoy said the tribe is working with developers to build the casino. The project depends on Congressional approval of a land claim settlement.
"The developers are responsible for getting Congressional approval
within 18 months," McCoy said in the current issue of the Sault Tribe News. "Only if all approvals are granted, the tribe and the developers will jointly determine how best to finance and build the casino."
Ballots are being mailed to tribal members this week.
