New Mexico governor open to Jemez Pueblo off-reservation casino

New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez (R) hasn't taken a position about an off-reservation casino in the southern part of the state.

Jemez Pueblo wants to build a casino in Anthony, near the Texas border. The site is more than 300 miles from the reservation, where economic opportunities are few.

“I’m not convinced that it’s the best thing to do right now, but that doesn’t mean I can’t be convinced,” Martinez, who lives in the southern part of the state, told NMPolitics.net.

The Bush administration rejected the proposed casino but the Obama administration is taking a second look at it.
